DECLARATIA DE LA TIMISOARA

English translation follows

Familia si casatoria sunt puse in discutie in lumina unor noi "drepturi ale omului".

In fata acestui asalt asupra valorilor traditionale, crestinii trebuie sa ia atitudine.

Declaratia de la Timisoara ii invita pe toti oamenii de buna credinta, care subscriu principiilor enuntate in ea, sa-si faca auzita vocea si sa dea glas valorilor in care cred - viata, casatoria si familia, asa cum le-a creat Dumnezeu - cu aceeasi fermitate, curaj si putere in Hristos cu care au facut-o si inaintasii lor.

Pentru noi, pentru familiilor noastre, pentru semenii nostri si pentru autoritati.

Preambul

Societatea umana a trecut, in epoca moderna, prin schimbari majore in plan politic, social, cultural si economic.

Aceste transformari, care au cunoscut un ritm accelerat in secolul XX si care continua in secolul XXI, au condus societatea umana spre mai bine. Viata comunitatilor si a indivizilor a fost in general imbunatatita.

Totusi, in contextul transformarilor social-politice ale secolului XXI, s-a creat potentialul pentru un conflict incipient intre valorile moralei crestine si "noile valori" seculare, in esenta anti-crestine, promovate la nivel international, in special in cadrul Uniunii Europene.

  3. Potrivit Sfintei Scripturi, intelegem sa ne facem datoria de cetateni si sa dam Cezarului - conducerii legitime a Statului - ceea ce se cuvine si sa ne supunem autoritatilor si legilor, in masura in care acestea nu contravin constiintei si valorilor noastre crestine.

  5. In calitate de parinti crestini, avem fata de copiii nostri datoria sa ii crestem si sa-i educam in spiritul ascultarii de Dumnezeu.

THE TIMISOARA DECLARATION

Drafted by the Alliance of Romania's Families (ARF) on the occasion of its annual conference held at the Areopagus Center in Timisoara on March 20th, 2010 and open to the public for signature.

Preamble

In the modern age human society has experienced major political, social, cultural and economic changes.

These transformations, which became more pronounced in the 20th century and continue their hastening in the 21st century, have advanced society in a positive direction. Overall, the life of both the community and the individual has improved. Injustice and deep inequality, prevalent in many parts of the world, have been eliminated through the protection of certain fundamental rights and great leaps in the quality of life.

At the same time, this state of affairs has brought about the precipitation of certain trends which undermine the fundamental values of human society. Aggressive secularism, radical tendencies to redefine the family, and the marginalization of moral and Christian values have become a palpable reality.

Romanian society has not been shielded from these transformations. Emerging from a long period of totalitarian rule, Romania and its people are still struggling to find their lost identity in order to rediscover those common values that lay at the very core of their civilization.

The Christian faith finds itself at the forefront of this common identity. It is shared by an overwhelming number of Romanian citizens. It is woven into our national ethos and it influences the social, cultural and political manifestations of Romanians, being our common, timeless and absolute point of reference.

However, within the context of the social and political transformations of the 21st century the potential has been fostered for an incipient conflict between Christian moral values and the "new values" of secularism which are essentially anti-Christian and are promoted internationally and especially within the European Union.

We can see that this conflict has already taken shape in various member states of the EU. We currently witness a growing number of cases where Christians are tried as criminals for their faith, and are being punished because their professed Christian values clash with new laws or new "human rights", most of which are illusory and run contrary to reason and the genuine benefit of mankind. This unfortunate trend puts pressure on Christians to censor, or even abandon, their faith and values to avoid being found guilty of violating certain norms of the state or public life. Many Christians see the current situation as a return to those periods in history when Christians were persecuted for their faith.

Based upon the foregoing, the signatories, Christians who adhere to the teachings of the Holy Scripture, the Holy Apostles of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and those who followed them and taught us the path to salvation, leaving aside theological differences, proclaim our common Christian values inspired by the Holy Spirit and strongly affirm the following:

  1. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). The Christian faith that we proclaim is above all transient social transformations or the spirit of one age or another.

  2. This faith guides our daily lives and daily actions, at all times and in all places. It cannot be hidden. We cannot be Christians only when we are at home or only when we are in church.

  3. In accordance with the Holy Scripture, we understand our duty as citizens to give to Caesar, that is, the legitimate leadership of the State, what is Caesar's, and to obey authority and the law, in so far as they do not conflict with our conscience and our Christian values.

  4. The family based on the marriage between one man and one woman is a fundamental institution of society and is created by God. It is an expression of the natural complementarity between man and woman, of mutual love and respect.

  5. As Christian parents, we have an obligation to our children to raise and educate them to be obedient to God. We are deeply concerned with the public displays of immorality which are allowed and even encouraged in the name of human rights and are tolerated without discernment.

  6. The rights of parents are fundamental, foremost among them the parents' right to carry out the civic, moral and religious education of their children as they see fit.

  7. Every child has the right to be born and raised in a family comprised of a man and a woman.

  8. The right to life, beginning at the moment of conception and continuing till natural death, is a fundamental right of all human beings.

  9. Freedom of religion and freedom of conscience are historical and fundamental rights.

  10. Human dignity is intrinsic to every human being, created in the image and likeness of God and takes precedence over any worldly authority.

  11. In our involvement in political and civic life we support and work with those who adhere to the values in which we believe. Every elected official or representative must represent the individuals who comprise his constituency and assert their values.

In conclusion, we call upon the Romanian State and public officials to respect and take into account, in the drafting and implementing of laws and public policy, the values and social and cultural traditions of the Romanian people, themselves of Christian inspiration, in order to avoid conflicts, both of conscience or policy, between citizens and the authorities which hand down the laws.
